Hiring Resources

The AHLA understands the difficulties related to finding, hiring and retaining valuable employees in today’s labour market. These are some resources that can help you effectively recruit and retain staff:

Temporary Foreign Worker Program

The Canadian federal government introduced new measures for Canadian employers to access Temporary Foreign Workers.

  1. Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA’s) will now be valid for 6 months.
  2. Low wage LMIA applications will need to show they have tried to hire underrepresented groups such as new comers to Canada and aboriginal job seekers. Asylum seekers with valid work permits have been added to this list.
  3. The maximum duration of employment for High-Wage and Global Talent Stream workers will be extended from two years to three. This extension will help workers qualify for more pathways to permanent residency, enabling them to contribute to the Canadian workforce in the long term.
  4. Seasonal Cap Exemption, which has been in place since 2015, will become permanent. There will no longer be a limit to the number of low-wage positions that employers in seasonal industries can fill through the TFWP. The maximum duration of these positions will be increased from 180 days to 270 days per year.
  5. Accommodation and Food Services are now among seven sectors in which employers will be allowed to hire up to 20% of their workforce through the TFW Program for low-wage positions.
  6. Canada will end the current policy that automatically refuses LMIA applications for low-wage occupations in the accommodation and food services and retail trade sectors in regions with an unemployment rate of 6% or higher.

Hiring Newcomers

Hiring newcomers to Canada and temporary foreign workers come with their own processes that need to be navigated properly. The AHLA helps break this down with these helpful resources.

There are two work permits that are possible in Canada: Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

More information on these programs is available from the Government of Canada.

The Government of Canada also offers additional information on hiring qualified French-speaking and bilingual candidates.
